The factory downpipe on the 6.4 Powerstroke is small and crushed throughout, leading to imperfect airflow which creates restriction and causes higher exhaust backpressure. This acts against the turbochargers, adding additional stress, reducing spool, and causing them to run hotter making for higher EGTs.

Once you are tuned, or if you do a lot of heavy towing, it is important to upgrade the downpipe to a 4" system that maintains the full 4" diameter throughout the full pipe. This will significantly reduce backpressure which takes a lot of stress off the turbos, improving their efficiency and ultimately creating good power gains while also significantly reducing EGTs. Overall, this is one of the best performance upgrades for both power and overall engine health and reliability.
